Costa-Hawkins is a state law that, most notably, restricts the ability of cities to change the start date of their rent control or to pass new rent control for buildings built after 1995.

Last year we were proud to support AB-1506 and Prop 10, both of which would’ve repealed Costa-Hawkins entirely. Unfortunately the real estate agents and landlords prevailed and both efforts failed. This year Assemblymember Richard Bloom is authoring AB-36, which substantially reforms Costa-Hawkins. See below for our letter in support.
